Introduction: Investigating a Complex Fault Zone

In September 2020, the Institute of Geophysics (China Earthquake Administration) launched an observational study focused on the Xianshuihe – Longmenshan – Anning River – Ta Liang Mountains Fault Zone. The primary goal was to better understand the microseismic activity, fault morphology, and deep structure of this complex fault zone.

SmartSolo Deployment in the Project

To carry out the study, the team deployed 160 short-period integrated seismic observation stations across the area. Of these, 120 stations featured SmartSolo IGU-16HR EB 3C units. The SmartSolo equipment proved to be the perfect fit for this application, offering several key advantages:

Over the course of 105 days of observation, the project team collected an impressive 5TB of high-quality raw seismic data. Despite the extended recording period, the stations still had approximately 25 days of battery life remaining. This showed that the SmartSolo IGU-16HR EB 3C units could support a total of 130 days of continuous data acquisition with this configuration.
